Environmental Change at CCHEC

At the Centre for Community Health and Environmental Change (CCHEC), we understand that environmental sustainability is inseparable from public health and community development. Our environmental programs aim to restore ecosystems, build climate resilience, and promote responsible natural resource management—especially in vulnerable and underserved communities.

Our Approach

CCHEC takes a community-based, low-cost, and sustainable approach to environmental protection. We integrate environmental education and action into all of our community programs, fostering local ownership and long-term impact. Our work supports climate adaptation while promoting food security, water conservation, and biodiversity.

What We Do

Tree Planting and Reforestation

We engage schools, community groups, and local institutions in tree planting activities focused on drought-resistant and indigenous species. These efforts help restore degraded land, improve microclimates, and prevent soil erosion.

School-Based Environmental Education

We train teachers and learners on environmental stewardship through eco-clubs and school garden programs. Learners are encouraged to participate in hands-on activities such as composting, seedling care, and water-saving farming methods.

Sustainable Agriculture and Permaculture

CCHEC promotes climate-smart agricultural techniques including tower gardening, organic composting, mulching, and crop diversification. These methods are tailored to work in areas with limited water and poor soils, ensuring productivity while conserving resources.

Water Conservation and Management

We build and rehabilitate water pans and promote rainwater harvesting techniques. These interventions help communities store and manage water during dry seasons, supporting both household use and small-scale farming.

Plastic-Free and Eco-Friendly Innovation

Through our menstrual hygiene and livelihood projects, we champion the use of biodegradable materials and alternatives to plastic. This reduces long-term environmental pollution and encourages circular economy practices.

Climate Change Awareness and Community Mobilization

We educate communities about the impacts of climate change and support them in adopting adaptation strategies, such as water conservation, natural resource management, and early warning preparedness.

Waste Management and Clean-Up Campaigns

CCHEC organizes community clean-up activities, promotes segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, and trains local groups in composting and upcycling techniques.

Our Commitment

CCHEC is committed to promoting sustainable living and environmental justice. By empowering communities to understand and act on environmental challenges, we aim to secure healthier, greener, and more resilient futures for generations to come.
