From Compassion to Impact: The Journey of CCHEC.
In 2014, a group of passionate public health professionals came together, driven by a shared vision of creating lasting change in their community. Out of this commitment, the Centre for Community Health and Environmental Change (CCHEC) was born—originally established as a Community-Based Organization (CBO) in Magarini, Kilifi County. Two years later, in 2016, CCHEC was officially registered, marking the beginning of a more structured and impactful journey.
The organization’s earliest efforts were deeply humanitarian. Recognizing the unmet needs among the elderly and destitute, CCHEC began by distributing clothes, shoes, and food to the most vulnerable in different parts of Magarini. These simple yet profound acts of kindness built trust within the community and laid the groundwork for broader engagement.
As CCHEC continued its outreach, it became clear that environmental degradation was a growing concern. This realization sparked the launch of waste management campaigns and tree planting initiatives, Inspiring change understand the link between a clean environment and better health outcomes. Schools and villages soon became active participants, with tree planting becoming both an educational tool and a climate action response.
The journey didn't stop there. Through its close interaction with communities, CCHEC identified a gap in education and empowerment, particularly among girls. This led to the creation of peer-led groups, where young people could engage in edutainment, mentorship, and sports as platforms for learning and personal growth. These groups have since evolved into safe spaces for addressing issues like menstrual health, gender-based violence, and life skills development.
From its humble beginnings rooted in humanitarian support, CCHEC has grown into a multi-sectoral force for community transformation. With health, environment, and education at its core, CCHEC continues to walk alongside communities—empowering them to create sustainable, self-driven change.
